Is It Actually Flushable? The List That Saves Sewer Lines

Accessible commercial restroom with toilet and grab bars

We pull things out of Central Texas sewer lines for a living, so take it from the people holding the auger: the word 'flushable' on a package means the product physically fits through the trapway. It says nothing about what happens in the hundred feet of pipe between your toilet and the city main.

The short list of what's flushable

Human waste and toilet paper. That's the list. Toilet paper is engineered to lose its strength within seconds of hitting water; nothing else you can buy is.

The repeat offenders

Flushable wipes top the list — they're fabric, they don't break down, and they weave together with grease in the line to form clogs with the texture of rope. Then: paper towels, feminine products, cotton swabs and pads, dental floss (it nets debris together), cat litter, and 'a little' cooking grease, which coats the pipe and catches everything that follows.

If your home has a grinder pump, the stakes are higher: wipes are the number-one killer of grinder pump impellers, and that's a four-figure lesson.

Already hearing gurgles?

Slow drains, gurgling, or sewage odor after years of wipe use usually means a partial blockage is already forming. Professional clearing plus a camera look costs far less than the dig-up that follows a full collapse-and-backup. We'll show you the inside of your line either way. (254) 366-8281.
