Why Is My Water Bill Suddenly So High? A Waco Plumber's Checklist

Every week someone calls us with the same opening line: "My water bill doubled and nothing changed." Something changed — water is going somewhere. The good news is that the cause is almost always one of five things, and you can narrow it down yourself in about fifteen minutes before deciding whether you need us.

Turn off every fixture and water-using appliance in the house, then go watch your water meter. Most Waco-area meters have a small leak indicator — a little triangle or star that spins with any flow. If it's moving with everything off, you have a leak, full stop. If it's still, your high bill is usage, not loss.

If the meter moves, shut the valve at your water heater and check again. Movement that stops points to a hot-side leak — often a slab leak, especially if you've noticed a warm patch of floor.

A flapper that doesn't seal can pass 200+ gallons a day in complete silence. Put a few drops of food coloring in each toilet tank and wait 15 minutes without flushing. Color in the bowl means that flapper is leaking. It's a cheap fix — and the most common cause of mystery bills we see.

Irrigation systems fail invisibly: a cracked zone line or a stuck valve can run thousands of gallons into the soil. Look for a stripe of suspiciously green grass, soggy spots, or a zone that hisses when the system is off. Hose bibs cracked by a winter freeze are the other regular — they often leak inside the wall, which is worse.
